Global coffee rituals

Coffee isn’t just a drink; it’s a ritual, a tradition, and a cultural experience. All over the world, people enjoy coffee in unique ways, each with its own special touch.

Recreate global traditions at home

In this blog, we’ll take you on a journey to explore different coffee rituals from around the globe and show you how to recreate these traditions at home using The Beanery’s beans. Whether it’s brewing rich, aromatic Turkish coffee or mastering the iconic Italian moka pot, you’ll be able to infuse your daily coffee routine with a bit of international flair.

Turkish coffee: a time-honored tradition

Turkish coffee is a rich, bold brew that has been enjoyed for centuries. Traditionally served in small cups, this coffee is known for its intense flavor and fine grounds that settle at the bottom of the cup. Turkish coffee is more than just a drink—it’s a social experience, often shared with friends and family.

What you’ll need:

  • The Beanery’s finely ground coffee (go for a very fine grind, almost powder-like)
  • Turkish coffee pot (called a cezve)
  • Sugar (optional)
  • Cold water
  • Small cups

Steps to take:

  1. Measure the coffee
Add one heaping teaspoon of The Beanery’s finely ground coffee per cup, directly into the cezve. You can also add sugar at this point, depending on your preference.

  2. Add water
Add about 90ml of cold water per cup. Stir gently to mix the coffee and water.

  3. Slowly heat the mixture
Place the cezve on low heat. Allow the coffee to heat up slowly without stirring. As it heats, foam will begin to rise, do not let it boil.

  4. Serve the coffee
Once the foam rises, remove the cezve from the heat and pour the coffee into small cups, ensuring an even distribution of foam. Let the grounds settle at the bottom before sipping.

💡Pair your Turkish coffee with a piece of Turkish delight or a small sweet treat for an authentic experience!

Italian moka pot: the essence of Italian coffee

In Italy, coffee is all about simplicity and quality. The moka pot is a staple in most Italian households, delivering a strong, espresso-like brew that’s perfect for a morning kickstart. It’s quick, easy, and requires minimal equipment. Ideal for recreating at home.

How to make moka pot coffee at home:

What you’ll need:

  • The Beanery’s medium-fine ground coffee
  • Moka pot (a stovetop espresso maker)
  • Hot water

Steps to take:

  1. Prepare the water
Fill the bottom chamber of the moka pot with hot water, just below the safety valve.

  2. Add coffee to the filter basket
Fill the filter basket with The Beanery’s ground coffee, leveling it off but without tamping it down.

  3. Assemble the moka pot
Place the filter basket into the bottom chamber and screw on the top part of the moka pot.

  4. Heat on the stove
Place the moka pot on medium heat. As the water boils, pressure will push it through the coffee grounds into the upper chamber, creating a strong, espresso-like coffee.

  5. Serve
Once you hear a gurgling sound, your coffee is ready! Pour it into a small cup and enjoy.

💡 Add a little sugar or enjoy with a splash of warm milk for an Italian-style macchiato.

Vietnamese iced coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá): the sweet and strong brew

Vietnamese iced coffee is a delightful combination of strong coffee and sweetened condensed milk, making it perfect for hot days. This ritual is all about balancing the strength of the coffee with the creamy sweetness of the milk.

How to make Vietnamese iced coffee at home:

What you’ll need:

  • The Beanery’s dark roast coffee, coarsely ground
  • Vietnamese drip filter (phin)
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice

Steps to take:

  1. Prepare the glass
Add 1-2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to the bottom of a glass.

  2. Set up the phin filter
Place the phin filter over the glass. Add The Beanery’s coarsely ground coffee (about 2 tablespoons) to the filter.

  3. Add hot water
Slowly pour hot water over the coffee grounds, filling the phin filter. Place the lid on top and let the coffee drip through.

  4. Stir and serve
Once the coffee has finished dripping, stir it together with the sweetened condensed milk. Add ice to the glass and enjoy.

💡 For an extra indulgent treat, you can blend the iced coffee with ice to make a creamy, coffee slush!
